This is a small secretive water bird found across sub Saharan Africa, typically in wetlands,swamps and areas with dense vegetation near water bodies.

The Black Crake is about 19-23 cm in length, it’s entirely black or dark grey.

It has red legs and toes that are long and slender,adapted for walking on floating vegetation.

The black crake feeds on insects,snails, Small fish,seeds and plant materials.

It is mostly active during day,it can often be seen foraging along the edges of water.

It builds its nest in dense vegetation over water,both parents participate in incubating eggs and caring for the chicks.
